Supervisors approve changes to bridge repair schedule

Upon receiving the news that two bridges were closed last week, the Grundy County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on Monday to modify the schedule and allow those projects to be moved up in the five-year plan.

County Engineer Gary Mauer reported that bridge C31, located northeast of Wellsburg, and M10, located northwest of Conrad, had been closed last Thursday, and he proposed moving both up by a year (C31 is scheduled to be repaired in the summer of 2019, and M10 is scheduled for replacement in the summer of 2020). The projects that would be moved back as a result are the replacement of bridge B21, located between Dike and Stout, and the repair of bridge E8, located just west of Wellsburg.

After the initial vote, however, board chairman Chuck Bakker expressed trepidation about the changes.

“How much traffic does M10 get? The one you want to replace it with (B21) gets a lot of traffic, feed trucks and hog trucks,” he said. “I’m not for delaying B21.”
