Supervisors approve hiring of additional jailer/dispatcher

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors gave Sheriff Rick Penning the go-ahead to hire an additional part-time jailer/dispatcher at the county law enforcement center during Monday morning’s regular meeting.

According to Penning, there are currently three jailer/dispatchers who are working “less hours” so that they can collect social security or work other jobs. John Calderwood, who retired earlier this year, has expressed a willingness to come back on a part-time basis.

The Sheriff’s office is also accepting applications for a new deputy to replace Nate Stahl, who will be stepping down. So far, they’ve received 20. The board voted unanimously to accept the plan for jailer/dispatcher hiring.

Assistant County Engineer Steve Cox spoke to the board about the 2019 driveway policy and the closure of Highway 175 between Morrison and Grundy Center for repairs. PCI, the Reinbeck-based road contractor that’s among the largest in the state, is working on the project.
