Supervisors discuss road paving, approve directing of sale for annex bonds

At its regular meeting on Monday, the Grundy County Board of Supervisors discussed a paving project for a gravel road on the Black Hawk County line and approved a motion to direct the sale of bonds not to exceed $1.4 million for the new annex building after accepting a bid for its construction last week.

County Engineer Gary Mauer spoke about the road project, which would cover a road that runs south of Highway 20 along the Black Hawk-Grundy County line. The two counties would split the cost of paving it, and Black Hawk County would maintain it. No dollar figure was given during the meeting, but it was noted that bonding would be necessary for the project, which did not sit well with chairwoman Barb Smith.

“I don’t want to have to start the protocol of bonding for road construction… it’s a slippery slope,” she said. “Once it starts, I think it’s hard to stop. I think it’s bad public policy.”
