Supervisors mull proposed airport regulations

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors delayed action on setting a public hearing for a new airport ordinance during its regular meeting on Monday morning while it waits to collect more information on its usage.

Brian Schoon of the Iowa Northland Regional Council of Governments attended the meeting to explain the proposed changes to the board and why they’ve been brought up in the first place: the city of Grundy Center is eligible for an $8,000 grant from the state DOT to upgrade the facility (which, despite its location four miles west of town, is owned by the city) with a $6,500 reimbursement available.

One of the caveats of the grant, however, is that the city and the county (because the surrounding land is under county jurisdiction) must adopt a new ordinance that restricts building in the area around the airport, most notably limiting the height of structures that can be constructed within an 8,875 foot radius of the runway.

In the first outer ring of the map (pictured), which extends 3,825 feet from the area directly around the runway, no structures over 150 feet tall would be allowed, and in the next 4,000 feet, no structures over 350 feet would be allowed.
