An Ankeny man who is suspected in at least two other child enticement and abduction cases around the state has been formally charged in Grundy County in connection with a pair of incidents in the Dike area last summer.

Jeff Lee Altmayer, age 57, is charged with a total of four felony counts: Enticing a Minor Under the Age of 13—Sexual Abuse or Exploitation (a Class C felony) and Enticing a Minor Under the Age of 16—Sexual Purpose (a Class D felony) for the first incident, which occurred near the Dike City Park on June 21 when a young girl was riding her bike, and Altmayer allegedly offered her money to come over to his car. He did not make a physical attempt to take her, and she rode off unscathed.

The other two counts, both of Enticing a Minor Under the Age of 13—Sexual Abuse or Exploitation, stem from an August 2 incident at the Dietrick Mobile Home Park along Highway 20 between Dike and Cedar Falls during which Altmayer allegedly approached two girls and offered them money, but they went inside a home and told an adult about the situation, leaving without a struggle. The four charges combined carry a maximum sentence of 35 years in prison.

“That’s great news,” Dike Mayor Mike Soppe said of the arrest. “I don’t think in our town, necessarily, we were on lockdown, but it definitely opened our eyes a little bit. Even though we are a tight knit community, this type of stuff can go on.”
