Tordoff calls it a career

“You’re never really off duty until you retire.”

After almost 30 years with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department and a career spent immersed in the world of law enforcement, longtime Deputy Sheriff and Lead Investigator Ron Tordoff is hanging up his badge for the last time on Friday, March 10: the same day he turns 55.

A native of Eldora who currently resides in Wellsburg, Tordoff knew from a young age that he wanted to get involved with the law, but he wasn’t sure how. He first got his foot in the door as a part-time jailer and dispatcher for Hardin County while also serving in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and working another full-time job, and in 1984, he moved to Marshalltown with his wife BJ and worked as a part-time jailer, reserve deputy and custodian for Marshall County.

In 1985, Tordoff graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, got hired with the city of Albion and worked there for two years before heading back to Eldora as an officer for two more years. It was then that he heard from Grundy County Sheriff Rick Penning, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Save for a brief departure and subsequent return in 1996, he’s been with Grundy County ever since. Between Penning, Tordoff and Chief Deputy Tim Wolthoff, the three have combined for over 100 years of service to the county.
