A rural Traer man who was convicted of Second Degree Burglary in Tama County 14 years ago faces a felony weapons charge after he was found unconscious parked outside of the east Grundy Center Casey’s with a Remington 12-gauge shotgun in his back seat last Wednesday night.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Grundy Center Police Officer Kyle Waugh, employees of the general store requested a welfare check on 34-year-old Terry Lee Schoenhut II, who had arrived 30 minutes earlier and never left his vehicle to fill it up with gas. Schoenhut, who was the only occupant and was believed to be heavily intoxicated, agreed to a search that revealed the weapon along with ammunition in the case. He was then transported to the Grundy County Jail for processing and released. A mug shot was not available.

Schoenhut was convicted of felony burglary in 2004, and after multiple probation violations, he received the full imposition of an initially suspended 10-year prison sentence. However, he spent just 5 ½ months at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility before being released and subsequently returned to the custody of the state some nine months later, bouncing back and forth between incarceration and supervised release since then.
