Tuesday's sports: No. 8 AGWSR girls vanquish No. 12 Knights

MASON CITY – The Cougars left Mason City with a pair of wins at a triangular hosted by Newman Catholic.
 
AGWSR (14-3) stifled Newman's bats in a 5-1 victory over the 1A No. 12 Knights and overpowered Belmond-Klemme for a 17-0 win in three innings.
 
Newman scored first on the Cougars with a single run in the first inning, but Taryan Barrick and the Cougar defense shut down the Knights (14-4) from there.
 
Barrick finished with six hits allowed, striking out 13 with two walks with the win in the circle.
 
She was also one of two Cougars to leave the park against the Knights, hitting a solo shot in the third inning to tie the game at 1-all. Makenna Kuper added a two-run bomb to center field in the sixth, accounting for two of Kuper's team-leading three runs batted in and putting the Cougars up 5-1.
 
Taylor Sperfslage led the Cougars with three RBI in the game with Belmond-Klemme (4-11).
 

Rebel boys rally, beat Cougars in extras

 
SUMNER – Gladbrook-Reinbeck came back from an early deficit for a 6-5 win in eight innings at Sumner-Fredericksburg.
 
The Rebels (11-3) trailed 4-1 entering the sixth inning but scored once in the sixth and twice in the seventh to force extra innings. In the eighth, Eli Thede scored on a wild pitch and Bryce Schick scored tagging up from third on a Tyler Tscherter flyout, an important two-run cushion as the Cougars (4-10) got one back in the bottom of the eighth but were stopped a run short.
 
Kyle Koppen had two hits with a double and two RBIs for the Rebels.
 

Falcons outlast Rebel girls in slugfest
 
GLADBROOK – The Aplington-Parkersburg softball team outlasted Gladbrook-Reinbeck in a Tuesday-evening slugfest, winning 16-12 in eight innings.
 
The Falcons (2-8) combined for 23 hits and took advantage of four Rebel errors to come out on top. A-P led 12-10 heading into the final half-inning for G-R, but the Rebels (1-9) were able to tie the game after Belen Ellenberger stole home with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.
 
A-P scored four in the top of the eighth and G-R went down in order in the bottom half of the extra inning.
 
Ellenberger had three hits, scoring three times and driving a run. Tessa Sienknecht added three RBI for the Rebels.
 

Spartan girls fall to Cadets
 
GRUNDY CENTER – Iowa Falls-Alden defeated Grundy Center 13-0 in five innings in last night's nonconference game.
 
IF-A (7-10) starter Elise Osman held the Spartans (6-5) to one hit, walking one with six strikeouts.
 

South Hamilton bests BCLUW boys
 
BEAMAN – The Hawks (4-7) pulled away for a 13-4 win last night. BCLUW fell to 6-7 overall.
 
The Comets scored three runs in the second inning to pull within 6-4 after two complete, but South Hamilton scored two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and added a single in the seventh, putting the Comets in a big deficit.
 
Today's local schedule: Grundy Center hosts BCLUW for baseball and softball. Softball varsity start is 6 p.m., baseball to start at 5:30 p.m. ... AGWSR baseball travels to West Marshall for an NICL West matchup scheduled to start around 7 p.m. ... Gladbrook-Reinbeck softball also heads to State Center for a 7:30 p.m. start with the West Marshall Trojans. ... The G-R boys will host Waterloo Columbus with a 7 p.m. approximate start time. ... Dike-New Hartford baseball hosts North Fayette Valley in Dike at approximately 6:30 p.m.
