Local veterans received special recognition on Friday, November 10, as area schools hosted Veteran’s Day ceremonies around the county.

In Grundy Center, the National Honor Society students hosted the ceremony, as they do each year. Three student speakers – Olivia Opheim, Brianna Heltibridle and Josh Kuiper – presented the program.

“We’re here today to honor the men and women who have worn this nation’s uniform and served in the armed forces. More importantly, we are here to thank them for their service and their courageous devotion to duty,” said speaker Brianna Heltibridle. “Whether they’ve served in a time of war or peace, American veterans all around share a common bond: the unwavering belief in the cause of freedom. A cause so strong they’re willing to give their lives if need be.”

In Conrad, Legion Post Commander Bob Daniel introduced retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Jeff Frank of Beaman, who was the featured speaker for the day. He also spoke at BCLUW Middle School in Union during its ceremony later in the afternoon.

Frank recounted his own unusual journey through 20 years in the military as a band member and referenced an article from The Grundy Register about local World War II veterans before personally thanking Bob Slinker and Don Vreeland, who were in attendance.

“The only reason I’m standing here today is because of the people that led the way and the people that are going to take over. Thank you,” Frank said.
