Walking for a cause: Grundy County Relay for Life raises nearly $40,000 to fight cancer

GRUNDY CENTER – Despite the sweltering heat, close to 200 people showed up to the high school track on Friday night to support this year’s Grundy County Relay For Life.
Cancer survivors, caregivers, family, friends and community members banded together to raise $37,125 in the fight against cancer, though organizers are still hoping to reach their goal of $40,000 by the July 31 fundraising cutoff.
Friday night, the Relay night kicked off with a flag ceremony and a performance of the National Anthem by Brenda Corbett.
Becki Jo Shuey, the Grundy County Relay for Life co-lead, gave a welcome speech to all in attendance.
“The Grundy County Relay for Life Committee is so proud to be standing here this evening with all of you in Grundy Center tonight, doing what other Relay participants in more than 5,000 communities across the country and around the globe do. By walking the track tonight, you are joining forces with millions of people worldwide who want to save lives; who want to continue the fight,” Shuey said. “We are the courageous, we are the passionate, we are the determined and we are the hopeful. While each of us has a unique reason for being here, we all have something very much in common – we want to make a difference in the fight against cancer.  And we are doing that.”
