Watermelon Days gears up for another year in Dike

As the dog days of summer approach, it’s once again time for the most popular celebration of fruit in Grundy County: Dike’s annual Watermelon Days.

The two-day festival will be held Friday and Saturday, kicking off on Friday with the brick oven pizza meal—a fundraiser for the Dike Pool—at State Bank, and the popular water ball fight will begin at 6:30 p.m. A movie under the stars and live music from the TJ Sauls Band at Slice will wrap up the first night.

Most of the events will commence Saturday: the ever-popular 5k run begins at 8:00 a.m. outside The Den, and a co-ed softball tournament for adults will start at 10:00 at the Kruger-Hemmen Sports Complex. The belt sander races will begin at 11:00 a.m., and lunch will be available at various food vendors.

The afternoon will include the famous kiddie tractor pull, rides on the Wolverine Express, the Little Mr. and Miss announcement, the parade at 3:00, and of course, the free watermelon feed at 4:00. The Seth Daniels Band will provide entertainment at JP’s on Saturday night, and the fireworks at dark will wrap up the festivities (a full schedule can be found on our special Watermelon Days page inside this week’s Grundy Register).
