Work begins on downtown revitalization facade project

Downtown Grundy Center will soon undergo a transformation, as construction crews set to work on the long-awaited Downtown Revitalization Facade project.
 
Ten downtown buildings are participating in the project, which will renovate the storefronts, including new windows and doors, masonry, exterior painting, signage and awning installations to create an aesthetically pleasing and cohesive appearance to the downtown district while preserving the historic characteristics of the buildings.
 
Mayor Al Kiewiet says it’s exciting to have work begin on this project that’s so long in the making.
“It’s nice to know that all the hurdles have been crossed on a project like this,” he said. “Now it’s time to see some of the long awaited transformation begin. With the start beginning in the late fall there will be some work done throughout the winter, but you’ll really be able to see the tangible changes starting next spring when the weather warms up again.”
 
The general contractor for the project is Cardinal Construction out of Waterloo, while Mason City architectural firm Bergland and Cram designed the facade renovation plan.
 
Cardinal Construction has been on site since October 24, and they’re starting the improvement project on the south side of G Avenue, in the block between 6th and 7th Streets. Buildings among the first to be worked on are home to Edward D. Jones, Grundy Veterinary Clinic, The Fleurist/Friends Studio Boutique, Hair Mechanic, and Crazy Daisies.
 
Once work is complete on the south side of the street, the contractor will move across G Avenue to work from east to west on the north side of the two-block project area, which includes Whink Services, American Family Insurance, 319 Decor and Design, Grundy Mutual Insurance, Spartan Fitness, Gram’s and Movement Dance.
