Voting by mail is safe

 

Before our spring local primary election I watched our auditor, Rhonda Deters, and her staff check our voting machines. They do these checks two times on all of the voting machines. While I heard their explanations of what they were doing I asked lots of questions.

 

First, know that voting by mail or voting by absentee ballot is the same thing.

Dear Rob and Citizens of Grundy Center and Grundy County:

I am pleased to write this letter of support for Barbara Smith, a community leader, my neighbor and a friend who has contributed an abundance of resources to help make a difference in the community and county for all of us.  If there were a lifetime of service award for Grundy Center, Barb would have to be at the top of the list.  She has invested her time talent and resources in a community and county that she loves and believes in.

I feel fortunate that Barb Smith is a candidate for Grundy County Board of Supervisors.

 

Many of us have a lot on our plate and haven’t the time we’d like for civic projects. Or maybe you’re like me and take retirement seriously. I mean, I seriously hate appointments, and I avoid meetings whenever possible.

I’ve spent the last several years eagerly awaiting the milestone moment I’ll be celebrating this weekend, but of course, it could never be as simple as I had hoped.

           

Kellie and I are getting married, and after several long discussions and moments of doubt, we made the difficult and probably controversial decision to move ahead with the originally scheduled date. I’m at peace with it now, and we’re excited to celebrate with the people who feel safe coming.

           

A fanatic's lament

I’m still in some form of denial about the lack of a Big 10 football season. One way or another, I expect to wake up this Saturday, the next one or maybe even the one after and flip on the TV to watch the Hawkeyes, give up on them a quarter in and hold out hope as they mount an improbable comeback only to blow the game down the stretch.

It has been a strange week. Well, stranger even than being in the middle of a worldwide game of “how badly do I REALLY need toilet paper?” for the last few months. There’s been a lot of unrest, especially here in the Midwest as issues like the Jacob Blake incident, and the strangely divisive Kyle Rittenhouse event. Everyone, everywhere seems bent on bickering, fighting and name calling.

 

In 2020, parents seem to always be grappling with how to explain these tragic events to children.

 

The wonders of electricity

You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, especially if what you’ve got is power.

           

As a resident of the southwest corner of the county, I’m now, like most everyone else in Beaman-Conrad, going on 24 hours and counting without electricity and wondering if we’ll ever have it again. Kellie and I played two candlelit games of Trouble last night before I proceeded to serenade her with my guitar until she got so annoyed that she went to sleep. Does it get more romantic than that?

Living the Good Life 

Grundy Center, a small town in rural Iowa placed in the middle of fields and farms, will always be my hometown. A town where my mom has always lived and where I have grown up.

With a population of around 2,600 people and an area of 2.53 mi², my town’s motto is ‘Living the Good Life’. To some city slickers, one grocery store, one coffee shop, two gas stations, one pool, one movie theatre, one bowling alley, three parks, one school district, and a handful of restaurants doesn’t appear to be lively, so to speak. But to a small-town girl like me, those businesses and their owners make Grundy the unique and enjoyable town that it is.

Throughout high school, I couldn’t help but notice how often my friends and classmates would repeat the phrase “I can’t wait to get out of Grundy Center.” Although I think the exploration of new places is very beneficial, it still hurt me a bit when I realized that not a lot of my peers viewed our great small town as I have.
