13th title special for Spartans

    MARSHALLTOWN — Early last fall, golf was the furthest thing from the minds of the Grundy Center High School girls’ golf team. There were bigger concerns … ones that involved far more important things than a sport.
    Nine months later golf is back, and the Spartans could not be happier. Grundy Center captured its second straight state girls’ golf championship Monday and Tuesday, dominating the Class 1A state tournament at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.
    “This one’s a little more special because she’s here … nothing changed … that really makes it better,” senior Lindsay Freeman said, referring to her close friend and teammate Hillary Samo, who returned to play the entire golf season after a battle with cancer late last year.
