Albright first at Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee

CEDAR FALLS — Grundy Center fourth-grader Libby Albright proved to be one of the area’s best spellers Saturday, placing first in the Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee in Cedar Falls.
All told, three Grundy Center fourth-graders competed. Joining Albright were Austin Betts and Mallory Haddeman. Stuart Whitehill and Riley Allen were also expected to compete but could not attend due to illness.
According to fourth-grade teacher Mary Rickert, there were a total of 41 fourth graders entered in the spelling bee this year and it proved to be very competitive. The students all knew their words, and were almost out of the sixth-grade level words before the two first-place finishers were finally chosen.
Albright will now continue her quest to be the best speller in Iowa by participating at the regional level Feb. 22 in Oelwein.
