Area players contribute to successful CVSC teams
The Cedar Valley Soccer Club had considerable success at the US Club 2023 Iowa State Cup this past November with help from some players from the area.
All six CVSC teams that participated in the event, held over two weekends starting in Waverly on Oct. 22-23 and ending in Bettendorf on Nov. 5-6, reached the semi-finals of the event.
From there, five teams reached the finals, and two teams - the under-17/under-18 girls and U-19 boys blue team - emerged as State Cup Champions.
The U17/U18 girls will represent Iowa again at the Midwest Regionals in June, with a chance to qualify for the National Tournament once again in July in Commerce City, Colorado.
Many of the players on this team were on the team that finished 3rd-place last summer at nationals, losing by a goal to the eventual national champions for what would have been a spot in the national finals.
The U17/U18 roster includes Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Jada Blohm and Alex Yoder, and Dike-New Hartford’s Miranda Tyler and Ana Bering, along with players from Spencer, Mason City, Cedar Falls, and more.
The team is coached by Micah McMorris with D-NH girls soccer head coach Kat Bering serving as manager and Coach Mentor this year. McMorris and Bering were co-coaches for many years before Bering took on the Wolverine position.
McMorris is also the coach of the U-19 girls team that finished as state cup runners-up after falling in double overtime in the championship game. Area girls on that team include GC/G-R’s Brooklyn Yoder and D-NH’s Megan Griffith and Katelyn Roeder. Assistant coach is Chris Rennie.
The U19 boys battled through adversity after receiving red cards in their semi and final matches to triumph as Iowa State Cup champions, also traveling to the Midwest Regionals in June. This group was also a 2022 Iowa State Cup finalist and 2021 Midwest Regional Finalist. GC/G-R’s Tyler Nolder represents the area on this group, coached by Jeff Nolder.
A-P/D-NH’s Ty Luhring was part of the U16 boys club that finished second; Erhart Bern and Anthony Bering of A-P/D-NH were on the semifinalist U-15 boys club - both coached by Kat Bering, Arturo Castaneda and Feli Rise.
The CVSC is led by Executive Director Kyle Nelson and Director of Coaching Aldin Muhamedagic.
