GRUNDY CENTER – Last Friday, Senator Rick Bertrand stumped his way around the easternmost reaches of Iowa’s fourth congressional district – including Grundy Center – to announce his run for congress.
At his stop in Grundy Center, Bertrand held a meeting at the Kling Memorial Library where he spoke on why he’s running for congress, and what his priorities will be if he’s elected.
“I believe Iowans are ready for a choice, maybe a different direction when it comes to the fourth district,” Bertrand said. “Within the last year I’ve had a lot of ag and business leaders come to me and say ‘we’re ready for a change, we’re ready for a new direction, new leadership.’”
He said that, if elected, he would focus on bringing back more opportunities for agriculture, infrastructure and manufacturing.
He stated that there is a unique opportunity in the fourth district right now with the infrastructure investment; the completion of Highway 20, Highway 65, and Highway 30.
“If you’re going to grow Iowa, it’s going to come from the fourth district,” he said. “The way I look at it is the fourth district is the new economic frontier when it comes to development, and we need a representative who’s going to be able to work with people and bring back opportunities to the state.”
Bertrand will be running against longtime congressman Steve King, who’s been in office since 2002 and has represented Iowa’s fourth district since the state was redistricted in 2012.
