Carolynn Messer

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Carolynn Messer, 85, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Dike, passed away June 6, 2024, of natural causes at her home.

Carolynn Messer was born June 21, 1938, in Dike, to Fred and Valborg Timmer. She attended school in Dike’s one-room schoolhouse where she loved teaching other children to read. Carolynn went on to further her education to become a reading teacher. She married John Messer and their life journey took her to Arizona, where she continued her career in education and started a family. 

Carolynn had a passion for teaching, spending most of her career at Coronado High School in Scottsdale. After retirement, her passions continued with reading and sharing time with friends and family. She enjoyed frequent visits to Iowa and stated she lived with “one foot in Arizona, and one foot in Iowa.” Carolynn lived a full life.

She is survived by her son, Steve Messer, and her daughter, Cheri Hodges and her wife Teresa Retterbush, and by caretaker/friend Michele Blackmore. She will be missed by many.
