Amidst financial struggles and its status as one of the smallest independent providers in the state, Central Iowa Healthcare (formerly Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center) announced in a press release Thursday that it is exploring “partnership options with other like-minded health systems.”

Central Iowa Healthcare currently operates its main hospital, a 49-bed acute care facility, in Marshalltown, and a new outpatient center was completed on the southern edge of town near Marshalltown Community College in August of 2015. In addition to the hospital, CIH owns primary care clinics in Marshalltown, Conrad, State Center and Tama/Toledo and employs over 700 people in all (including 14 employees at the Conrad clinic). According to its website, it serves nearly 60,000 residents in Marshall County and the surrounding areas.
