Christmas at the Movies

GRUNDY CENTER - The official kick-off to the Christmas season begins in Grundy Center on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30, as Main Street Mingle and Small Business Saturday make a return.

Grundy Center Chamber-Main Street committee members have planned two days of activities that combine traditional community favorites with a new theme, “Christmas at the Movies”.

“We invite everyone to head out into the community to enjoy shopping, family activities, and favorites such as the lighting ceremony, lighted trolley rides, and the arrival of Santa Claus,” says Katie Lewis, co-chair of the planning committee.

The traditional lighting of the downtown rooftops takes place on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m.

On Saturday, the focus is on “shopping small”, when local businesses participate in “Small Business Saturday” activities. The national promotion draws attention to the importance of shopping at small, locally owned businesses during the holiday shopping season.

“The support of local retailers is a win-win – both for the consumer who finds great products right here at home, and for the economic support it provides to the entire community,” says Jan Onnen, interim Chamber-Main Street director.

In addition to Main Street Mingle Events, a variety of beautifully decorated Christmas trees will be on display this week during the annual Festival of Trees celebration. This year, trees are on display at the Kling Memorial Library and at local businesses downtown. The theme is “Christmas at the Movies.” Check out the display at the library this week on Wednesday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), Friday (6 to 8 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m. to noon). The event is free and open to the public.
