City, AmericInn owner clash on hotel/motel tax

GRUNDY CENTER – On Tuesday, May 3, a public vote will be held on the implementation of a seven percent hotel/motel tax.
During this vote, citizens will have the chance to vote in favor of the hotel/motel tax, or against the tax. A majority vote, with no minimum number of votes, will determine whether or not the tax is passed and will be implemented.
In specific, the tax will affect one business: the AmericInn of Grundy Center, the only hotel in Grundy County.
Barb Smith, longtime Grundy Center resident and owner of the AmericInn of Grundy Center, said she is vehemently against the tax, as she feels that it will hurt her business.
“It’s unfair,” she said. “The tax singles out one business, one person, one family.”
Smith said that she believes the tax will most definitely hurt her business as rates will go up, which could deter guests from staying in town.
