Close encounters of the third kind: UFO enthusiast presents at Kling Memorial Library

After speaking to a group of children and adults for about a half hour at the library in Grundy Center last Wednesday morning, Chad Lewis had them split almost evenly into who believed in Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and who doesn’t.

Lewis has been fascinated by the topic for as long as he can remember, perhaps in part due to his home state of Wisconsin: three of its cities claim the title of “UFO Capitals of the World.” In Grundy Center, he shared several Iowa-centric stories, even including some of the downtown buildings from here in town.

One of the most notorious comes from Van Meter, just west of Des Moines, where residents reported seeing a “winged monster” casting a beam of light from its forehead in 1903, a creature straight from a 1980s science fiction movie. Lewis touched on other cases and noted that for its population, Iowa has a relatively high level of UFO sightings that are reported.
