Comets hold off Crusaders in district opener
Led by senior Josh Sharp’s 23 point performance, the BCLUW boys beat Valley Lutheran for the second time this season on Monday night with a 59-53 win, and this time it came in a Class 1A, District 9 opener that will allow the Comets to advance and take on Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Thursday night.
“We’d been in a slump the last few games, and we just went back to the basics of the offense on Sunday in practice. I thought the kids performed really, really well,” BCLUW coach Luke Higgins said.
The two teams were evenly matched for most of the first quarter, and the Comets led just 14-13 after one as Valley Lutheran’s Blake Carlson hit a jumper with just a few seconds remaining. In the second, the teams traded buckets until they were tied at 21, but BCLUW scored a bucket before Sharp hit a three to make the score 28-22. The Comets led 28-23 at halftime.
