Comets withstand late comeback attempt to advance in regional opener

Basketball is a game of momentum, and Saturday night’s Class 2A regional opener between BGM and BCLUW featured a handful of huge runs and swings between the competing teams. In the end, however, the Comets held off a late BGM comeback attempt and advanced with a 63-54 road win in Brooklyn.

“I’m really proud of the girls because we could’ve folded. There were times this year where we would’ve just not fought back and continued to play,” BCLUW coach Dave Lee said.

Both teams struggled to score early, but the Comets got a big spark off the bench in the form of junior guard Skylar Veldhouse, who entered the game and promptly hit a three-pointer to give BCLUW a 9-2 lead. After the teams exchanged points, Veldhouse hit another long distance shot and made the score 14-4 with about a minute and a half left in the opening frame. The Comets led 14-6 after the first horn.

“We really started off kind of stagnant, and Skylar came in and knocked down three 3’s in the first half. Now that was huge,” Lee said. “It was just nice to have somebody come in off the bench relaxed and be able to shoot the ball.”
