Cougars dominate Cal

ACKLEY – Hot-shooting AGWSR hit four early 3-pointers and never looked back on its way to a 54-24 Class 1A, Region 2 first-round victory over CAL, Latimer Thursday in Ackley.
The Cougars (12-10) used the early success from the outside to build a 14-2 lead in the first five minutes and led by double digits most of the game from there.
“One of our goals was that we had to get out and establish that we were a team that they were going to have to play catchup with all night long,” AGWSR coach Laurie Gann said.
“When we had some of the shooting we had in the first quarter it really helped build a cushion.”
The Cougars were equal opportunity from outside early in the game, with Becca Wiarda, Taylor Risius and Kim Ellingson each contributing to the early barrage. All told, AGWSR finished with eight 3-pointers in the game including four from Wiarda who finished with a game-high 14 points.
