Cougars remain undefeated after tough defensive battle

ALGONA — AGWSR needed all 48 minutes of its Class A, District 2 showdown with Bishop Garrigan to remain undefeated on the season. Clay Meinders scored on a one-yard plunge with nine seconds left as the Cougars edged Garrigan 6-0.
Friday’s game was a scoreless defensive struggle that appeared headed for overtime until the final two minutes. Sully Hofmeister returned a punt 80 yards to the Bishop Garrigan 15 to set up Meinders’ winning score. The Cougars missed the extra-point kick but Garrigan never ran another offensive play as Garrigan attempted to lateral the ball on the ensuing return. The final lateral was fumbled and Joey Neely fell on the ball to ensure the win.
