GRUNDY CENTER- Trying times have created challenges across the health care sector, but they have also fostered innovation. Craig Buskohl, the radiology team leader at Grundy County Memorial Hospital, has helped to devise a practice that allows radiologists to remain in a separate room during x-rays and conserve personal protective equipment (PPE) in the process.

“This method has been out there before, and it’s helping other people which is what we’re here for,” he said. “In these times when exposure to this nasty virus and using PPE at the same time was essential, we’re happy we could come up with something and help the greater good.”

The change removes the need for the workers to wear facemasks during the procedures, and they can see the x-rays through glass panes. While it’s certainly been an adjustment for both staff and patients, Buskohl says that it’s been a big success so far.

“(Patients) have been pretty understanding through this. This whole thing is completely unprecedented,” he said. “Everything is completely flipped on its lid compared to how they’re used to having the experience here.”

The process has also sped up results for patients and increased overall efficiency.

Buskohl, who grew up as an Eagle Scout, told The Grundy Register that he’s always been a staunch advocate for preparation, and the ever-evolving rules and changes have made it more difficult than ever before. Nevertheless, he’s doing all that he can and hopes that the changes will benefit everyone at the hospital in the long run. He’s already shared it in a Facebook group for medical providers and throughout the UnityPoint network, and he says it’s been well-received.

“It’s definitely helped me getting sleep at night knowing that we’re ready for whatever comes our way,” he said.
