GRUNDY CENTER – Elementary Principal Brian Sammons says one goal the the staff and administration at the school have always strived for is to teach students to love reading; Sammons and his staff work hard to create dynamic and innovative literacy experiences for students, and create programs that get kids excited about books.

Some of the best experiences, he says, involve connecting students with mentors. Last Friday, that’s just what the school did, as they brought in San Francisco-based author and illustrator, LeUyen (Win) Pham to spend a day with the students.

“Win delivered a fantastic mix of storytelling, lessons on writing and illustrating, humor, and enough inspiration for 275 elementary students,” Sammons said.

Over the years, Win has helped create over 100 books, working with a number of famous authors including Jerry Spinelli, Mo Willems, Julianne Moore, Shannon Hale, and more.

Some of her more popular work includes: “Freckleface Strawberry,” “The Princess in Black,” “Vampirina Ballerina,”  and “Grace for President.”

During her day at Grundy Center Elementary, Win visited with classes from kindergarten through fourth grade, presenting a unique and entertaining program for each group.
