Dike Fire Dept. honors fallen firefighters at 9/11 stair climb tribute
On September 11 of 2001, 343 New York City firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice, in hopes that others might live.
In an effort to honor and remember the men and women who selflessly gave their lives that day, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation organizes a yearly 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and fundraiser. Each participant of the climb pays a personal tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center, symbolically completing their heroic journey to save others.
This year, the climb was held in late April in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Two members of the Dike Fire Dept., Dave Eilderts and Nathan Schmitz, took part in the climb, and even earned themselves a spot of honor as they raised the most money of any team that took part in the climb.
Together, Eilderts and Schmitz raised over $1,600, making them the highest earning team. Eilderts himself raised $1,200, making him the highest earning individual in the competition; a feat which he was honored for at the climb.
