Don Bosco storms past Grundy Center in district baseball semis

HUDSON – After a rain delay that left both teams waiting in their dugouts for almost an hour and a half, Don Bosco pounced on Grundy Center in the first inning and coasted to a 13-1 district semifinal victory in Hudson last Tuesday night.

The Dons (26-4), reaching the semifinals with a 31-0 win over Collins-Maxwell, got to Spartan pitcher Travis Kuester quickly with back-to-back doubles from Kendall Becker and Cael Frost, and Kuester was pulled after just 1/3 of an inning when Fischer Ohrt singled to make it 2-0.

Wes Willis replaced Kuester, but Don Bosco kept scoring thanks to two walks and a sacrifice fly. Cael Tenold walked to make it 7-0 with two outs, and freshman Dayne Zinkula entered the contest in relief. After a Cedric Yoder grand slam over the left field fence, it was 11-0.

“I had a script, and I had it mapped out in each inning on what we were going to do. The script just got a little hiccup in it. We didn’t throw strikes, we walked some guys and they’re just a remarkable hitting team,” Grundy Center coach Pat Brown said. “If we could’ve just thrown strikes, we had an opportunity.”
