Friday's boys basketball: Gladbrook-Reinbeck remains undefeated

FAIRBANK -- Gladbrook-Reinbeck picked up a cross-NICL victory against Wapsie Valley from the East, 62-52 winners on Friday at Wapsie Valley High School.

William Kiburis scored 18 points to lead a quartet of Rebels in double figures: Tyler Tscherter added 17 points, Dylan Riffey and Eli Thede contributed 11 points each.

Tscherter added seven rebounds, five assists and five steals, William Kiburis had a team-leading eight assists.

Wapsie Valley took a 43-41 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Rebels closed strong with 21 fourth-quarter points. The Rebels were 12-of-18 at the free-throw line on Friday and hit eight of 20 three-pointers.

The Rebels are 6-0 overall and are tied with South Hardin for the NICL West lead at 4-0.

SPARTANS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT: Dexter Whitehill scored 14 points in Grundy Center's 57-44 victory over West Marshall at Grundy Center High School.

Grundy Center has won three straight after an 0-2 start, tied for second in the NICL West with AGWSR at 2-2, with both teams trailing South Hardin and Gladbrook-Reinbeck's matching 4-0 records in NICL West play.

Whitehill added a team-leading six assists. Wes Willis contributed 12 points and nine rebounds, Brayden Sawyer had 10 points, four assists and three steals. Cale Hendricks scored six points with four steals in his return to the Spartan lineup.

COUGAR COMEBACK FALLS SHORT: AGWSR nearly closed out a deficit as large as 17 points against South Hardin on Friday, but the Tigers held off the Cougars for a 54-47 victory at South Hardin High School.

South Hardin heads into the break tied with Gladbrook-Reinbeck for the NICL West lead at 4-0, the Tigers improved to 4-2 overall. AGWSR is tied for second with Grundy Center at 2-2, AGWSR is 2-3 overall.

Luke Starr scored 17 points for AGWSR and Jaden Penning added 13 points.

COMETS GET FIRST DIVISION WIN: BCLUW defeated East Marshall 64-58, the Comets' first NICL West win of the season. The Comets head to 2020 with a 2-5 overall record.
