G-R boys break away, beat Comets

REINBECK – A 20-2 run to end the first half got the Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys rolling to a 65-42 victory over BCLUW on Friday.

Jackson Kiburis led all scorers with 21 points for the Rebels (5-3, 4-2 NICL West) and Tyler Tscherter and Dylan Riffey scored 17 points each. Eli Thede added two points and led the Rebels in rebounds (7) and assists (7).

The Comets led 21-16 early in the second quarter prior to the Rebels' big run into halftime. Jack Garber paced BCLUW's scoring with 15 points, adding four assists, five steals and two blocked shots. Mason Yantis added 12 points and Jonny Neff scored 11 points.

Yantis scored eight points and Neff six in the first quarter as it looked like BCLUW's size and depth might have had G-R out of sorts.

"We wanted to play some man defense, but with our limited players we had to play really small," G-R head coach Scott Kiburis said. "We knew we'd have a hard time but we went zone to begin with, had lulls in there but we got out to a good lead."

Tscherter, second on the team with a 14.1 points-per-game average and leading the team in assists, noted that the Rebels had to pick up the effort to outstretch the bigger Comets.

"We had to hustle after everything we could," Tscherter said. "We're small, fast and quick and we have to use that to our advantage and lock up their big kids."
