Gas leak leads to Grundy Center school evacuation
GRUNDY CENTER — A mowing incident led to a few tense moments at Grundy Center Middle School-High School last Wednesday.
According to Superintendent Jerry Schutz, a mowing accident caused a gas leak at the meter on the east side of the school at just after 1 p.m. as students were being dismissed for a regularly-scheduled professional development time. Students were moved away from the building as Grundy Center Police and Fire helped school staff evacuate the building and the gas was turned off. Students were then sent home as scheduled.
Schutz said the school will be installing several safety poles, supplied by Black Hills Energy, in front of the meter so that such an incident does not occur again. The gas lines were relocated from inside the building to outside this summer to improve safety at the building.
