GC-DNH Academic Decathletes earn state bid

om Grundy Center and Dike New Hartford rolled into Waterloo to participate in the regional competition of the Iowa Academic Decathlon. GC-DNH had a strong showing. The No. 1 team scored 29,088, good enough for a second place finish and an invitation to the state competition in March. That same team also earned bragging rights as champions of this year’s Super Quiz event. The team was comprised of Dylan Hendricks, Nick Nielsen, Nicole Weissenfluh, Jacob Eilers, Eli Harberts, HayLee Neessen, Andrew Heidemann, Austyn Pikna and Nelson Sager.
This group of decathletes is a competitive bunch. How competitive are they? Each district competing in Decathlon is allowed to qualify one team for the state competition. If a second team was allowed, the GC-DNH No. 2 team, which put up 26,307 points, would be invited to the state competition as the number five qualifier. Not too shabby.
A total of 38 students represented GC-DNH, and they represented their schools well. Sixteen individuals earned 33 ribbons. Ribbons are awarded to the top three finishers at each competitive level in each event. Senior Jake Eilers led the parade with five Scholastic ribbons.
