GC/G-R boys soccer advances to substate final

REINBECK – Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys soccer is one game away from the state tournament after steamrolling Sigourney-Keota and Pella Christian in the first two rounds of Class 1A Substate 6 competition.

The sixth-ranked Rebels defeated S-K 10-0 on May 19 and dispatched Pella Christian 9-1 on Monday, May 23 to improve to 15-1 overall.

Tyler Nolder had 10 assists across the two postseason games to increase his season total to 41 assists, which currently rates second in the state across all classes. Nolder, Ethan Gienger and Isaac Clark all passed the 20-goal mark for the season as well.

Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck hosted West Liberty in a Class 1A Substate 6 final on Wednesday, May 25, after this issue went to press. The winner will advance to the Class 1A state tournament to be held June 1-4 at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.

West Liberty has reached the semifinals in each of the last two seasons and is ranked 13th in 1A.

Solon ends Falcons’ 1st season

 

SOLON – Aplington-Parkersburg/Dike-New Hartford boys soccer made the long journey to Spartan Stadium in Solon for a first-round Class 2A substate game on Thursday, May 19.

Solon, rated 13th in 2A, defeated A-P/D-NH 10-1. The Falcons’ first season ended with a 2-11 record.

Walker Weedman had the goal for the Falcons, scored in the first half. Adrian Huisman made 20 saves in net for the Falcons.

Nolan Dall, Ely Good and Devin Bernard were the only seniors on the roster for the Falcons, and three of only five upperclassmen on the roster total, with 12 freshmen on this year’s roster.

 

Gilbert knocks out Cadets

 

GILBERT – Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR/South Hardin boys soccer was shut out in Class 2A Substate 3 second round action, falling 2-0 to Gilbert.

The Cadets’ season ends with a 9-9 overall record.

They reached the second round by way of a 4-2 victory over South Tama on Thursday, May 19.

Brodey Vierkandt scored three goals and Blake Janssen added the fourth.

Vierkandt and Janssen were two of the 15 seniors on this year’s Cadet roster.
