Girls state wrestling tourney starts Friday

The Iowa Wrestling Officials Coaches Association will hold the second Iowa High School Girls State Wrestling Tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock High School in Waverly, Iowa on Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25.

The tournament has expanded to two days, starting with preliminary action on Friday at 5 p.m. — once every bracket has reached the quarterfinals, action will resume at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, with an 11:30 a.m. expected start time for the finals.

This year’s tournament features 376 wrestlers, compared to just 87 wrestlers last season. The wrestlers will compete at one of 11 weights – 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 170, 195, and 285.

Three area athletes are competing in the state tourney this year: AGWSR’s Ali Gerbracht and Trinity Rotgers and Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center’s Grace Coates.

Admission: $8 for a one-day pass, $10 for a two-day pass. Doors open at 4 p.m. on Friday, 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Preliminary bracket information

(information is subject to change due to scratches or missed weigh-ins)

106: AGWSR’s Ali Gerbracht (4-0 against girls) is the returning state champion and the top seed in the 106 bracket. Gerbracht received a first-round bye and will face either Isabella Bogdonovich (MFL MarMac, 3-4) or Kylie Hessenius (LeMars, 2-2) in the second round. Bettendorf’s Ella Schmit (3-0), who was the 106 runner-up last season, is the second seed on the bottom-half of the bracket.

138: AGWSR’s Trinity Rotgers (10-1) received a first-round bye. She’ll face either Crestwood’s Morgan Moser (2-5) or Ankeny Centennial’s Marissa Jones (0-3) in the second round. Rotgers was ranked third at 145 pounds by IAwrestle.com.

145: A-P/GC’s Grace Coates (5-4) will wrestle Algona’s Bethany Carlson (0-8) in the first round. The winner faces second-seeded Lakin Lienhard (7-1) of Crestwood in the second round. Coates is ranked eighth at 145 pounds by IAwrestle.com.
