Green shares Girls State experiences

Deidra Green, a BCLUW senior-to-be, was one of over 200 young leaders chosen to attend the annual Girls State convention in Des Moines last week, and as she described it to the women of the Conrad American Legion Auxiliary on Monday afternoon, she learned a ton about the processes of government at all levels throughout the five-day event that ran from June 16-21.
           
Attendees were split into two parties—the Federalists and the Nationalists—and Green was placed in the Federalist Party in the town of Harbor Ray. Her first appointments were to become a city health officer and a civil services commissioner. In one day, she heard over 70 speakers expounding upon their political platforms.
           
“That was very tiring, but they were all really good,” she said.
           
She wound up becoming a county attorney, which she remarked was fitting because of her propensity for arguing and being right. Governor Kim Reynolds made an appearance and spoke to the girls, along with several other state officials and politicians. They visited the Capitol building and learned about the judicial branch and the history of the lawmaking process in Iowa.
