Grundy Center families, friends and historians are invited to celebrate a very important person in Grundy Center’s history, Herbert Quick, during a ceremony Sunday, Oct. 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Orion Park.
“His birthday is remembered and celebrated in many places throughout the United States, and it is most appropriate that Grundy Center commemorates it in Quick’s “home county”,’ said Loren Kruse, of the Grundy Center Historical Society.
The birthday party will take place at the Shelter House and Colfax No. 9 School situated in Orion Park Sunday, Oct. 22 from 1 to 3 p.m.  The program will be held at 1 p.m. and will feature Luther Thoreson as Herbert Quick as he shares reflections on his life and time in Grundy County.
The event is sponsored by the Grundy Center Historical Society and Grundy Center Lions Club. An ice cream sundae buffet and cupcakes will be served following the program until 3 p.m.
Guests can view the footprints of Herbert Quick across Iowa and the US and gain a better understanding of why Quick is important to our community.
“His footprints are interesting to follow as his family made their way from Wisconsin to Iowa and to Grundy and Hardin Counties to Sioux City and Washington, D.C.,” Kruse said. “His contributions and legacy are well respected throughout the literary world and his writings are said to be the most accurate accounting of the Iowa Prairie.”
Kruse, society director and former editor of Successful Farming, has written an interesting accounting of this important piece of history.
