Grundy Center schools may face tough financial decisions

GRUNDY CENTER — Last spring, the Grundy Center School Board discussed the possible need for difficult financial decisions down the road. The time to make those decisions is nearing, according to Superintendent Jerry Schutz.
“I believe there will have to be some cuts,” Schutz said in a meeting with The Grundy Register Friday, following a School Board work session Thursday night.
Schutz said if things do not change as early as next year (Fiscal 2016), the Grundy Center Community School District is in serious jeopardy of seeing its spending exceed its state-authorized budget.
Over the past four years, the District’s unspent budget balance, the amount of money it has that exceeds its maximum authorized balance, has dropped from more than $950,000 to just less than $246,000. If that trend continues into next year, according the Schutz, Grundy Center spending would dip into illegal territory.
“If we stayed on current course, we would be $500,000 below our authorized spending (next year), which is illegal,” he said. “And if we continued to do that the state would have to take us over.”
