Grundy Center volleyball season ends in state quarterfinal match

CEDAR RAPIDS – The Grundy Center volleyball season came to an end last Wednesday in the Class 2A quarterfinal round of the 2013 state volleyball tournament. The Spartan loss came at the hands of familiar state tournament foe Western Christian in three sets, 15-25, 13-25, 15-25.
“We know Western’s style,” Grundy Center head coach Darwin Sents said. “We knew it was going to be a tough match when we came in.”
The balanced Western Christian attack pounded out 50 kills and 12 ace serves against the Spartan defense, and the Wolfpack used their height and athleticism at the net to limit Grundy Center’s offensive game.      “We were hoping we could get them a little more out of their system than we did,” Sents said. “The trouble was, even if they were a little out of system they hit the ball so high a lot of them were going over our block. We’re very good defensively but when their hitters can swing pretty much anywhere without us getting a touch on the ball, that leaves our back row exposed.”
“They’re a very athletic, very talented, well-coached team,” he said, “They were better than us today. We didn’t have the fire power to swing back at them.”     “It was definitely a tough loss,” junior Riley Sents said. “I thought they played very well and we made a lot of errors on our side of the net.”
