Joyce Petersen
CEDAR RAPIDS — Joyce Petersen passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 12, 2023 at Northbrook of Cedar Rapids.
Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 22 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Overton Funeral Home Traer. Funeral services are planned for Monday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. at Fredsville Lutheran Church, 32756 150th St., Cedar Falls. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Joyce was born July 13, 1925 in Eldora. Her parents were Charles and Susan (Hess) Ware. Joyce was the sixth of eight children. Joyce graduated from High School in Grundy Center at age 16 and at age 18 she graduated from Iowa State Teachers College. Joyce enjoyed teaching elementary at Grundy Center, Parkersburg and Toledo.
Joyce met Dwayne Petersen and they were married on May 7, 1949. They formed a farming partnership that spanned 46 years in Grundy Center, Dike and Traer. They raised fourchildren. Joyce had many interests: charting and hedging commodities, helping run the farm, gardening, canning, preserving, politics and Legion Auxiliary. She liked spending time researching vitamins, minerals, diets and all kinds of treatments to help family and friends. She enjoyed going to Sunday School and Sunday worship. Joyce was a member of FredsvilleLutheran, Traer United Methodist and Traer St. Luke’s Lutheran churches.
Joyce was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband and sisters: Alice (Floyd) Schwarck, Jessie, Barbara (Max) Doss, brothers: Chester (Betty), Louis (Helen), Clyde (Nadine), and granddaughter Susan Hinds.
She is survived by her brother, Charles (Ruth), children: Katie (Michael) Hinds of Marion, Bill Petersen of Marion, John Petersen of Sahuarita Ariz., Eileen (Steve) Weber of Overland Park Kan., grandchildren: Sarah Hinds, Andrew (Beth) Hinds, Kristin Weber, Courtney (Eric) Dinkel, Bella Marie Petersen, and great grandchildren: Jesse and Alex Hinds.
