Knights stun Spartan boys

GRUNDY CENTER – A strong third quarter lifted Union to a 65-57 upset victory over Grundy Center in a district semifinal on Friday in Grundy Center.

The Spartan season ends at 16-6, and it was the final game for seniors Patrick Brown III and Ben Wegmann.

Union trailed 30-27 at halftime but rallied to a 43-38 lead after three quarters. Union was able to hit enough of their plentiful amount of free throws, 20-of-30 from the charity stripe compared to just five free throws on five total fouls by the Knights in the game.

Brown III led the Spartans with 14 points and Jalen Kirkpatrick added 13 points. Brayden Wallis scored 10 points with five rebounds. Tate Jirovsky had a team-leading six rebounds as well as four points.

Union advanced to a district final against Hudson played in Dike on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
