The Mill finishes construction of Ostfriesen-style windmill

GRUNDY COUNTY – Around 13 years ago, Richard Smith had a dream. As he sat in his car, day after day, counting the traffic at the Highway 20 west and Highway 14 junction, he dreamed up a welcome center to attract travelers to stop in Grundy County for fuel, food and more.
After he realized that there was a 100-mile stretch from east of Waterloo to Webster City with no place to stop for those services right along Highway 20, the idea for what would become “The Mill” was born.
Because of Grundy County’s strong Ostfriesen heritage, it was always part of Smith’s dream to someday build an Ostfriesen-style wooden windmill at the site.
Now, just over ten years later, Richard’s dream of a windmill for the site has finally become reality. Three weeks ago, the construction of the windmill was completed.
