New GCHS quintet makes mark on statewide stage
GRUNDY CENTER — Walk down the hall at Grundy Center High School. Walk through the cafeteria and past the auditorium … and then listen closely. The sound you just might hear could be that of the high school’s newest vocal group — a group that has already made its mark on a statewide stage.
Aaron Beck Brunk, Jack Beck Brunk, Doug Kirchmann, Kaleb Neher and Jacob Waltersdorf were recently one of the featured groups for the Iowa Wild hockey team in Des Moines, singing both “O Canada” and Billy Joel’s hit “For the Longest Time” as the Wild took on the Abbotsford Heat in an American Hockey League game. The performance capped a rise from obscurity in a matter of months for the quintet of friends.
A. Beck Brunk said the five had wanted to sing together for awhile, but had to wait until the timing was appropriate.
“We wanted to sing ‘For the Longest Time,’” he said. “We wanted to sing it and we were waiting for Jacob (who sings the lead part) to be in high school so he could sing.”
“We don’t have a whole lot of loud, male singers, so we decided to get together and find a couple of pieces that we thought we could try out,” Kirchmann said.
