Ninety years and counting, Pie Lady still going strong

GRUNDY CENTER — Have you enjoyed a piece of pie while eating lunch at Manly Drug in Grundy Center, or while sitting down for a dinner with family and friends at Holland’s Lone Tree Inn? Then chances are, you are acquainted with The Pie Lady.
For more than 70 years, Viola Roberts, known to many simply as Grundy Center’s Pie Lady, has been making pies for restaurants and special occasions through Grundy County and beyond. Sunday she celebrates her 90th birthday.
“I just can’t believe that I am going to be 90,” Roberts said without a hint of hesitation. “I’ve been really active for many, many years. We used to live on the farm and I started this catering business about 40 years ago.”
Roberts said the Pie Lady moniker has truly only been her’s for the past decade. It was at her 80th birthday when her family put in the newspaper that she was turning 80, referring to her as the Pie Lady.
