Quilting for a cause: Hen and Chicks raises money to fight ALS, help needy kids

When you spend most of your life quilting, you’re bound to accumulate a few that you won’t be able to put to use. So longtime Hen and Chicks Studio Owner/Operator Heidi Kaisand decided to do something for the community that’s supported her all of these years.
           
“There comes a point at which they’re doing me no good sitting in a box,” she said.
           
As this issue of The Grundy Register goes to press, Kaisand had already raised over $1,700 to be split between the ALS Association Iowa Chapter and the BCLUW Needy Kids fund, and the proceeds of the remaining sales of these quilts will go straight to those charities. The idea came to her from a conversation with her daughter Virginia, who asked how she would know which quilts were really important to the family.
           
“There’s value to them, and instead of just giving them away, how could we raise money that would then help other people?” she asked. “When we started talking about causes, I wanted something locally as well as something with more broad appeal.”
