Reinbeck couple charged with burglary, vehicle theft

A Reinbeck couple was arrested in Grundy County last weekend after allegedly stealing a truck from Cedar Rapids and attempting to break in to a rural residence near Dike.

Adam Rees, 36, and his wife Ashley, 32, have each been charged with Second Degree Theft and Third Degree Burglary, both Class D felonies. Chief Deputy Tim Wolthoff apprehended them on the morning of Sunday, May 12, upon arriving at a home on 160th Street about two miles west of Dike.

According to the complaint, Wolthoff noticed a green Chevrolet pickup with Linn County plates (later found to be stolen) on the property, and Ashley Rees was sitting in the passenger’s seat.  Adam Rees was discovered with a crowbar in his hand, and he was taken down and handcuffed at gunpoint—though, as Sheriff Rick Penning noted, he was cooperative throughout the process.

The owner of the property later told authorities that the house had been broken into, and the stolen items were found in a pile in the garage. After his Miranda Rights were read, Adam Rees admitted to breaking into the house and stealing the truck. Mr. Rees, who was released from prison in March, has a lengthy history of felony burglary and drug convictions mostly in Grundy and Black Hawk Counties.

During an interview, Penning told The Grundy Register that a wider investigation into several thefts around the county is ongoing—including ATVs, UTVs and lawn mowers—and Mr. and Mrs. Rees can at the very least be considered “persons of interest.” Similar incidents have also been reported in Black Hawk and Buchanan Counties.
