Richard Owings

Richard Dick Owings, 75, of Marshalltown, formerly of Conrad, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023, at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines.

A memorial service was held at the Miaic Church July 8. Inurnment was in the Conrad Cemetery.

Richard was born on Oct. 31, 1947, to his parents Newton and Lula (Worley) Owings. He was raised in both Conrad and Grundy Center and graduated from Beaman-Conrad High School in the class of 1965. For several years he worked as a farm hand for local farmers and then entered the United States Army in 1969. He served his country for 13 years and earned numerous citations for service. He was honorably discharged and then worked as a prison guard in Tennessee for several years until he returned to Iowa where he retired from GreenProducts in Conrad due to health concerns.

Richard was married to Mieko Ames and the couple welcomed their children Thomas and Marsha into their family. They later divorced. He was then united in marriage to Gloria Richeson on August 15, 1995. They enjoyed 27 years together.

Richard was a member of the Conrad American Legion and the Lions Club. He was an avid Chicago Bulls fan, loved playing cards and collecting playing cards. He enjoyed cribbage and backgammon, but his true joy in life was his family and friends.

Richard is survived by his wife Gloria Owings of Marshalltown; his children Thomas (Terri) Owings of Wichita, Kansas, and Marsha (Devin) Kirschman of Sioux City, South Dakota; grandchildren Christian Owings, Savannah Owings, Essence Owings, Jade Owings, Tawny Askins, Daine (Kaitlin) Thompson, Cedric Kirschman and Christopher Kirschman; great-grandchildren Eden, Givonni, Grome, Tyshawn, Messiah, and Cooper; two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Benjamin “Son” Owings.
