School Board approves high school P.E. changes
GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center High School students will no longer have to exceed state physical education requirements in order to graduate from high school.
Last Wednesday the Grundy Center School Board approved a recommendation to reduce graduation requirements for P.E. from 2 credits to 1, which is the state requirement.
The unanimous decision came following a lengthy board discussion that touched on the need for the change as well as future hopes for the district.
“You really need to ask yourself what your mission for P.E. is,” Secondary Principal Ann Lebo said. “If it’s two (credits), I need more staff.”
The need for the change, which goes into effect for current seniors, comes as District staff cuts last year left just one P.E. teacher, Matt Lindeman, to teach students in the secondary building, grades 5-12. High school students have only one option to take P.E. during the school day, fifth period, though that can create conflicts with other classes. Juniors and seniors may fulfill their requirement through independent study work while all students have an opportunity to take their required coursework before school during the first trimester. The latter, however, drew concern from the Board.
