School Bond issue falls far short

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center Community School District’s controversial bond issue proved unpopular with voters Tuesday, who overwhelmingly defeated the measure that would have allowed taxpayer funding for a project to build additions at both the elementary and secondary schools.
In addition, voters declined to reelect the current School Board president, instead placing newcomers in two of the three open four-year Board seats.
Turnout was extremely high compared to most school elections, with more than 36 percent of registered voters casting ballots, most during Tuesday’s eight-hour polling period. The high turnout led to a delay in results being released, as poll workers counted ballots by hand. Of the 988 ballots cast in Grundy Center, 904 were cast Tuesday.
